If you like using Microsoft Teams and OneDrive for your productivity needs, but you wish you could upload and share files larger than 100GB, fret no longer. Microsoft has confirmed that it plans to bump up this limit to 250GB at no additional cost to you.
Microsoft’s Generous Gift to Office 365 Users
Microsoft hasn’t made an official announcement on the topic just yet, but an interesting entry has appeared on the company’s Microsoft 365 Roadmap.
The Roadmap is a reliable way of getting a sneak peek at what Microsoft has in store for its productivity services. We’ve spotted a few incoming features in advance on the roadmap, such as Microsoft’s plans to improve Team’s navigation controls.
In a recent update, Microsoft added Feature 70558 called “OneDrive: 250 GB file size support in Microsoft 365.” Its description is very self-explanatory:
Users will be able to upload large file sizes up to 250 GB in OneDrive, SharePoint and Teams.
Fortunately, you won’t have to wait long until you can share gigantic files on OneDrive. The update is due to drop sometime in January 2021, the same month as when it appeared on the roadmap.
Microsoft’s Major Moves in a COVID-19 World
With COVID-19 still making the rounds, it’s no surprise that remote working has become a major part of online business. Microsoft knows this and has ensured that it made a tidy profit thanks to COVID-19 and the adoption of remote workplaces.
Now, the company wants to ensure it stays that way. To do this, it needs to give people everything they need to get their work done so that users don’t feel like they need to use third-party tools to solve specific problems.
Now that all of our work is done at home and stored on the cloud, it’s likely that people are uploading and sharing gigantic files more often now than before. If this is true, this generous size increase is a good way for the software giant to keep people within the Microsoft 365 ecosystem instead of wandering off to another file-sharing website.
Upping the Limits on File Uploads
With the competition heating up in the remote work niche, Microsoft is doing all that it can to ensure it’s the top dog. There’s a good chance that this upload upgrade is but one of many small changes Microsoft will make to its service to ensure people rely on its products for the foreseeable future.
In fact, if Microsoft’s track record is anything to go by, we may see more generous freebies arrive for Teams. For instance, the company recently removed the free meeting timer for Microsoft Teams calls to better compete with Zoom.
