ESET Antivirus Review
ESET is the antivirus solution of choice for over 110 million users. And it’s the leading antivirus in Europe, but is it the best antivirus software for you?
Well, let’s take a look at its security features, ease of use, mobile app, customer support, and plans and pricing to find out.
►ESET Antivirus Security Features
ESET’s core-security feature is an anti-malware scanner. It aims to protect your devices from malware like ransomware, trojans, spyware, and rootkits. AV-TEST Institute independently assessed ESET in three areas: protection, performance and usability.
The Windows and Android versions of the ESET antivirus did an exceptional job, earning a perfect six out of six in all three categories. ESET also provides some practical, additional security features like parental controls and set-up rules for your children’s internet usage and a password manager, to securely store and organize your login credentials.
I also appreciate the anti-theft feature that comes in handy. You know, your computer gets stolen, it lets you track the location of your device, send one-way messages, create phantom accounts and even access your laptop’s webcam to watch the thieves.
►ESET Antivirus ease of use
ESET’s security suite is available for Windows, Mac, Android, and Linux. Setting up ESET on a PC is a simple process. I signed up on their website, using my email and they provided me with an ESET NOD32 antivirus key. I was then able to download and install the software quickly.
As soon as you run the program, ESET does a great job introducing you to all their additional security tools like banking and payment protection, their password manager, and their anti-theft features.
The ESET user interface is well-organized and intuitive. Their settings menu provides tons of configuration options. And if you’re a gamer? Well, you should check out the computer protection settings. There you could switch on gamer mode to conserve system resources for gaming.
There are also lots of internet and network protection settings you could configure to your liking. Now the initial scan of my one-terabyte drive took 18 hours. That is significantly longer than most antiviruses I’ve tested. ESET takes the time to whitelist files, so it can skip them in future scans. That improves the performance of subsequent full scans, so you won’t notice they’re running at all.
Now the following scans I performed, only took around three minutes and used very minimal CPU processing power. ESET can also scan your removable media like USB drives and DVDs and allows youto set up custom scans.
Another thing I was happy about was ESET’s accuracy. During my time testing this antivirus, I didn’t encounter a single false positive.
►ESET Antivirus Mobile App
When it comes to ESET Mobile Security, iPhone users are out of luck, since it’s only available for Android. Sorry, but the Android app has over 10 million downloads and an impressive 4.8-star rating on the Google Play store.
There are two versions of ESET Mobile Security to choose from: a free version and a premium version. The free version is actually excellent. Not only does it provide a robust anti-malware program, but it also offers some other useful security tools. For example, the connected home feature allows you to test your home router for vulnerabilities, like weak passwords and out-of-date firmware, and shows you who’s connected to it.
It’ll also audit the security settings and privacy settings for all your apps. And if you upgrade to the premium version, you’ll get more advanced features, like proactive anti-theft payment, network attack protection, scheduled scanning, call filtering, and way more. If you’re not sure if the premium version is worth the money, well, you can get a free 30-day trial to find out. If you need help with your ESET product, their website has in-depth user guides and a YouTube-video knowledge base.
►ESET Antivirus Customer Support
They also have an active online forum where users work together to find the best solutions and workarounds. You can also connect with Eset’s technical support team via live chat from Monday to Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Pacific Time. I was happily surprised to see ESET offers their live technical support for free. Something, not all antivirus companies dish out for no extra cost. You can also send your queries to their support via email. However, that took a tedious eight days for their customer support to respond to my email. So I’d recommend their live chat if you need prompt assistance.
►ESET Antivirus Plans
ESET offers three plans. Their basic ESET NOD32 antivirus plan protects one to 5 devices. The ESET NOD32 license key, provides a dependable and discreet antivirus.
The ESET Internet Security plan provides everything from the NOD32 plan, plus features like a firewall, parental control, and webcam protection.
The ESET Smart Security Premium plan provides everything from the ESET Internet Security plan, plus a password manager and the secure-data feature to encrypt your files and removable media.
ESET offers a free30-day full-feature trial of the ESET Smart Security Premium plan. And you can get your hands on this trial without even giving away your credit card information.
Now, we here at Win-keys.com understand the importance of safeguarding all your devices. All too often we see hijacked systems or stolen credentials. So an antivirus really isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity. Overall, you can count on ESET for top-notch anti-malware protection for your PC and Android mobile device. It also comes with useful additional features like parental controls, a firewall, and anti-theft protection. Wifi monitoring comes standard on their mobile app, which isn’t the case for most antiviruses. And it does come in handy, particularly if you’ve had issues with people accessing your wi-fi without your permission.
However, ESET is not without its faults. They don’t offer an iPhone app, and their price point for multi-device protection is more expensive than their competitors like Norton 360 and McAfee. And their customer support is pretty slow in responding to emails.
